Garments for Married Daughters

Gifting new range of garments to married daughters is another common practice seen on the auspicious Holi day, not to forget her entire in-laws side who needs to be equally presented with new set of garments. As there is a tradition of gifting "dandia", a special kind of saree, to both the daughter & her in-laws coupled with the necessary accessories.
A lot of preparation goes into the making of this particular saree form which is essentially a white cotton saree made of voile or 'mulmul'. The beauty of the saree lies in its borders which are dyed with Indian pink, a non-fast color. All four sides of the saree are gathered which are dipped in turn into the Indian Pink, thus allowing the color to catch on the fabric at least two to three inches on each side. Once getting spread in uneven splendor towards the middle of the saree, the ultimate effect is that of a gradual spreading of blush. The saree is decorated with breathtaking designs highlighted with intricate Indian motifs. The border is adorned with gold or silver 'gota' stitched on to the edges of the dandia while the 'pallu' (saree portion meant for head covering) is beautified with a 'kiran' or a fine fringe of gold or silver which adds a shimmering touch. It is an absolute must for a newly wed bride to adorn herself with a "dandia" saree on the Holi day.

Holi Colours

Holi Colours

Colours bring the glow to the Holi making the life's and the dressing of the people colorful. Let us celebrate the ultimate eve of the Holi is safe and colorful notation.

Colorful Legend
The legend from which the tradition of playing colours started is full of colours in itself. The story goes that the very colourful Indian god, Lord Krishna was jealous of his soul mate Radha's fair complexion, since he himself was very dark.
Playful and mischievous Krishna appreciated the idea and implemented it. The game of applying colours thus gained so much popularity that it became a tradition and later it turned out to be a full fledged festival.
Naughty young Krishna complained to his mother Yashoda about this injustice of nature. To placate the child, doting mother asked Krishna to apply colour on Radha's face and change her complexion according to his choice.
Till date, lovers desired to colour and be coloured by their mates. The application of colours has in a way become an expression of love.

Spirit of Holi
The sight of Holi is so beautiful to watch; as the entire atmosphere gets filled with the clouds of colours...And, as if to match with the cheerful mood of the people nature itself wears its best and most colourful clothes.
The energy of the people as they move out in groups, playing dholaks, singing songs in their highest possible pitch; completly drenched in colours but more so in the spirit of Holi - throwing gulal and abeer in the air and on the feet of their elders as a mark of respect- it is this spirit of the festival that makes it so delightful and memorable.
Holi Knows No Bars
When it comes to Holi, hair are let loose and no restrictions hold. People open up themselves and enjoy the festival to the hilt. The tradition of consuming bhang too escalates the level of enthusiasm.
It is a real fun to watch the otherwise always sober people making a clown of themselves. Singing songs at a high pitch and playing practical jokes on others. For, the rule of the day is, 'Bura na mano Holi hai'. (please don't take any offence for it is Holi).
At some places Holi parties are also organised where the colour and water flows endlessly. Till everybody becomes one like nature in the season of HOLI-FULL OF COLORS AND LIFE.
Significance of Different Colors
Green - Vitality
Red - Purity
Blue - Calm and sedateness
Yellow - Pious feeling
Holi Celebrations
The festival of colours is extremely popular amongst children. They eagerly wait for a prey with a bucket full of colour water, an ever ready water jet- popularly called a pichkari and loads of colour packets to give vent to their mischief nature.
In modern day colonies, people move out in groups, called tolis visiting one house from the other, forcefully colouring the shy ones and exchanging greetings.
Rather, the festival is not confined to any age group for old, young and kids everybody turns as naughty as the other on the day. Play with colour continues till every inch of all participants is coloured and the person becomes virtually unrecognizable.
The spirit of the festivities knows no bound particularly in houses which witness the arrival of a new bride. For everybody wishes to play Holi with her. At some places there is a tradition in which the first Holi after marriage is played in the brides maternal house. There too, the enthusiasm for Holi is at its peak.

Holi Safety Tips

Holi Safety Tips

Below are some safety measures that are to be kept known in the eve of the Holi.

1)Play safe. Don't get to boisterous and do not let others to be rude on you.

2)The best option would be to play with natural home made colours. Your skin and hair will feel tampered with the use of skin friendly natural products.

3)Use more of red or pink colours which looks good and can easily taken off. Gaudy purple, green, yellow, orange have more harmful chemicals in them and should be avoided.

4)Make sure that your face is well creamed before and after the play.

5)Apply thick coating of paint on your nails- both in fingers and toes so that they remain protected.

6)Oil your hair well, so that colour doesn't stick on your hair and can be washed off easily later.

7)Cover your hair. Make use of hat or caps to protect your hair from being coloured with hard-to-rinse dyes.

8)Make sure that powder or any other product does not get inside your eyes. Eyes are extremely vulnerable on Holi because of their strategic place in body and also because of the use of harmful chemicals in colors these days. Please ensure that your eyes remain protected at all times. Use a sunglass to protect your eyes from a misfire of colour filled darts or water jets.

9)Use dental caps to save your teeth from any unwanted stains.

10)Put on your worst clothes so that you won't have to take on the hassles of an immediate washing.

11)Rags like tattered denims and bright shades like black, blue, green, purple are highly recommended.

12)Try to save yourself off from all possible attacks on the face. In case your such attempts fail, keep your eyes and lips tightly shut if you are attacked on your face.

13)If possible avoid going outside your home, atleast for the peak hours of celebration. The premises of your home ensure that you are safe from pouncing hooligans, even friends who can be a little rough on the day.

14)When traveling keep the car windows thoroughly shut, even if you don't have an AC car. Do not bump into the frenzied group of mob if you take to streets. Better you cross the road to the sidewalk across. Or, simply stay at a safe distance.

15)Do not use permanent dyes. If someone has applied it on you, do not rub the face with soap immediately in order to get rid off it, especially when it is wet. Instead, use good quality cleansing milk for removal. It's better than using soap, which will dry up your skin.

16)Rotten eggs when thrown on your head, flying missiles from locality buildings…are still not too bad, will be smelly yet is a good conditioner for your hair. But tar, shit, Mobil, stones and all the rubbish that you can be hit with is not. Avoid being a prey to hooligans.

17)Remember you also have police on your side and if any untoward revelers misbehave, you can make your complaint. Mark out the locality, building and if possible the person.

18)If natural colours are not possible, then ensure a better quality of colours. Buy colours from a reputed shop or vendor.
